Birds, Not Mosquitoes is a multi-agency partnership, urgently working to save the native honeycreepers of Hawaiʻi from extinction. Our honeycreepers are at risk because of introduced mosquitoes carrying serious diseases including avian malaria, which is the cause for severe declines in honeycreeper populations statewide. On Kaua’i, avian malaria has dramatically reduced the numbers of two of our endemic species ‘akikiki (fewer than 100 individuals left) and akeke’e (fewer than 40 individuals left).
Our plan is to use a common, naturally- occurring bacteria as a “mosquito birth control” to suppress mosquito populations in Hawaiʻi.
Learn more about “mosquito birth control” from local experts, why only male mosquitoes (which don’t bite) will be released and how this safe and targeted technique will drastically reduce mosquitoes in our forests and potentially save our birds from extinction
Seating begins at 11 a.m. and the event will run from 11 a.m.– 1 p.m. with the formal presentation beginning at 11:30 a.m.
