SUMMARY:Birds\, Not Mosquitoes: I Ola Nā Manu Nahele – So The Forest Birds Thrive
DESCRIPTION:Birds\, Not Mosquitoes is a multi-agency partnership\, urgently working to save the native honeycreepers of Hawaiʻi from extinction. Our honeycreepers are at risk because of introduced mosquitoes carrying serious diseases including avian malaria\, which is the cause for severe declines in honeycreeper populations statewide. On Kaua’i\, avian malaria has dramatically reduced the numbers of two of our endemic species ‘akikiki (fewer than 100 individuals left) and akeke’e (fewer than 40 individuals left). \nOur plan is to use a common\, naturally- occurring bacteria as a “mosquito birth control” to suppress mosquito populations in Hawaiʻi. \nLearn more about “mosquito birth control” from local experts\, why only male mosquitoes (which don’t bite) will be released and how this safe and targeted technique will drastically reduce mosquitoes in our forests and potentially save our birds from extinction \n \n\n\n\n\n\nReservation Required. Call Keoki’s Paradise in Po‘ipū at 808–742–7534 to save your spot.\n Seating begins at 11 a.m. and the event will run from 11 a.m.– 1 p.m. with the formal presentation beginning at 11:30 a.m.

SUMMARY:Preserving Paradise: Protecting Rare Native Plant Species
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the natural history of the Hawaiian flora\, background on the causes of rarity and threats to native biodiversity\, and the current conservation status of native plants. In addition\, learn about work being done by the State and its partners to survey for\, monitor\, collect\, and preserve the rare native plants of Kaua‘i. \nEvery culture around the world has its own way of sharing information. Here in Hawai’i\, we share informally by “talking story” — slowing down and taking time to explore ideas\, stories\, opinions\, and history with the people around us. Join us at Keoki’s Paradise and Talk Story to Mālama O Ka ‘Āina (to respect and care for the land)\, an educational enrichment program cultivating the awareness of important environmental issues around Kaua‘i. \nReservation Required. Call Keoki’s Paradise in Po‘ipū at 808-742-7534 to save your spot. \nSeating begins at 11 a.m. and the event will run from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. with the formal presentation beginning at 11:30 a.m.
